The numerous emails below were sent by PABBIS to Fairfax County Providence District Supervisor Gerald Connolly. He is very informed on how explicit some books are in Fairfax County Public Schools and doesn’t care. The emails below give a clear picture of what Connolly supports spending scarce tax dollars on for use in the “education” of K-12 school children.
Connolly has compared the material below to certain sections of the Bible. He has said he “can show you sections of the Bible that ought to be banned in the schools.”
Gerald Connolly has not yet told the public which “certain” sections of the Bible he is talking about. We think that is because a side-by-side comparison of whatever sections of the Bible he identifies, to the explicit and age-inappropriate material in the FCPS K-12 books he supports, will result in him looking very extreme.

about this book that it justifies placing this controversial material in public

major problems with their elementary school children reading this material.
This book is well known as being
very controversial and is the 4th most challenged book of the 1990’s. Many of
these challenges were in middle school and high school. Why is the FCPS
doing this? Who authorized this? Will this book be in every FCPS elementary
school library soon?
With the school funding issues in
Fairfax County, why waste scarce dollars procuring books like this? How many
other books like this one are now in FCPS elementary schools? How many other
books like this one are now on order for FCPS elementary schools?

which is in FCPS middle schools:

slur and is about homosexual oral sex. Why is the FCPS doing this?
Why waste
increasingly scarce dollars procuring books like this? How many other
objectionable books are now on order?
This book
is only 106 pages long, has a catchy cover and is very easy to read. In fact
the reading level difficulty is at the level of 4-5th grade or below. Will it
be placed in elementary schools next?

book used in some 9th and 10th grade FCPS History classes. Exposing our children to extreme

PABBIS has learned that a book with very specific how to instructions on sex acts is in the Fairfax County Middle School Library system.

have to explain to citizens why it was selected? Is this book representative of
what he and the School Board Chair, Mr. Gibson consider decent enough, since
not legally obscene?
The FCPS
library catalog system didn't catalog this book under the term sex manual, or
sex instruction. The subject terms in the FCPS catalog are very innocuous:
Teenagers--Life skills guides, Interpersonal relations in adolescence, Adolescent
psychology and Life skills. Nothing indicating just how extreme and explicit
the content really is.
Sari is an
on-line advice columnist for teens. In this book, cataloged as non-fiction, she
answers various questions. About 25 percent of the book is her advice on sex.
The book gives instructions on various sex acts, with very specific details.
Learn about masturbation, blue balls, dry humping, fingering, hand jobs, blow
jobs, the doggie style and spoon positions, what ‘69’ is, how to have sex for
the first time without pain, lubrication and other sex topics!
Perhaps
FCPS could save a lot of scarce funds by eliminating middle and high school
Family Life Education (FLE) and just requiring students to read this book. Or
maybe they could save just a little if they stopped buying this trash with our
tax dollars and fired the people who are doing this.

Required Reading in FCPS - The
Handmaid’s Tale
Over the last two years many parents and teachers have
contacted PABBIS with concerns about The Handmaid’s Tale. Two months ago
a parent of a student at Edison HS spoke before the school board complaining
about the use of this book. We reported this in the November 15, 2002 PABBIS
News. We predicted the only action this mother gets from the FCPS and the
school board would be the usual "tough luck" letter (with challenge
form attached). Even if this mother's challenge is successful her child will
already be done with this school year and this book assignment long past.
However with the recent school board moratorium on
challenges this mother cannot even challenge the book. When this moratorium is
lifted will she even have standing to challenge it? Or, since the class will
have already completed the assignment on this book will her challenge be
disallowed? Or perhaps deemed "not serious"?
The Handmaid’s Tale is a good example of the type literature that FCPS and the
school board thinks acceptable. In fact they think it is so good it is
required. Not just in the library, or on a reading list, but required.
School Board member Robert Frye has said it is a lie that
"...our school system is forcing books with extreme content, vulgarity,
graphic sex and violence on our students..." It is absolute baloney to say
that the reading of this book is not "forced" because the student
didn't have to take the class or that the parent should somehow have
omnisciently known what was in the book and asked for another.
Robert Frye says, "The truth is that the books used in
Fairfax County Public Schools are age appropriate, support the approved
curriculum...." The Handmaid’s Tale is very explicit and vulgar.
PABBIS wonders just what type of "approved curriculum" requires the
use of this book. Perhaps Robert Frye could explain to the public a little more
about this curriculum and why there are no other books that can be used to
"support" it."
The explicit excerpts from this book have been on the PABBIS
website for over 18 months now. The story takes place in the future where a
psychotic, pseudo-Christian theocracy controls every aspect of life. Young
woman are used as sex slaves to make babies for older couples. Here is what
happens when the main character, who is a sex slave, is in bed with the older
couple:
“..towards the head of the bed [the wife] is arranged,
outspread.. legs are apart, I lie between them.. head on her stomach, her pubic
bone under the base of my skull, her thighs on either side of me. She too is
fully clothed.. My.. skirt is hitched up to my waist. Below it the Commander is
f######.. f###### the lower part of my body.. not making love.. [not]
copulating.. because it would imply 2 people and only 1 is involved.. wasn’t a
lot of choice, but there was some, and this is what I chose... I wish he would
hurry up... [His wife] grips my hands as if it is she, not I, who’s being
f#####.. [he] f#### with a regular 2-4 marching stroke, on and on like a tap
dripping. He is preoccupied.. somewhere else.. an impatience in his rhythm
now.. isn’t this everyone’s wet dream, 2 women at once? They used to say that.
Exciting, they used to say... nothing to do with sexual desire, at least for
me, and certainly not for [his wife]. Arousal and orgasm are no longer thought
necessary.. his not-unpleasant face hanging over my torso... If he were better
looking would I enjoy this more?.. an improvement on the previous [man], who
smelled like a church cloakroom in the rain, like your mouth when the dentist
starts picking at your teeth.. Kissing is forbidden between us. This makes it bearable...
He comes at last, with a stifled groan of relief... rests a moment, withdraws,
recedes, rezippers.. nods, then turns and leaves the room..”
Here is a description of when the main character is forced
to watch "..an old porno film, from the 70’s or 80’s":
Women kneeling, sucking p###### or guns, woman tied up or
chained or with dog collars around their necks.. hanging from trees..
upside-down, naked,.. legs held part, woman being raped, beaten up, killed.
Once.. woman slowly cut into pieces, fingers and breasts snipped off with
garden shears, her stomach slit open and her intestines pulled out.”
At a FCPS Town Hall meeting on May 2, 2002 to discuss book
selection a former FCPS teacher spoke about The Handmaid’s Tale [see 16
May 02 PABBIS News]. She spoke about the obscenities, masturbation, graphic
violence, homosexuality, the use of drugs and alcohol, and abnormal sex in the
book. She asked FCPS the following question: What are students in Fairfax
County being inspired to do and to value by studying books like The
Handmaid’s Tale?
To date FCPS has provided no answer to her question and this
book continues to be used as required reading. It is very clear that FCPS and
the school board have an extreme viewpoint on what is acceptable with minor
children in our taxpayer funded schools.

at Groveton ES
Principal Christine Lamb and Librarian Barbara Russell of
Groveton ES continue their full frontal attack on children and parents. This
news story is again about inappropriate book at Groveton ES - My Father's
Scar.
This book is specifically noted in the FCPS library catalog
review to be for grade 8 and up. The catalog has this book listed under the
subject terms homosexuality, alcoholism and child abuse. It is found in
Groveton ES and no other elementary or middle schools in the county.
In this book the children in Principal Lamb's elementary
school will read the f and s-words and 'faggot' over a dozen times each. This
book is about a homosexual college student. The book skips back and forth
between his current college life and the past. Principal Lamb's students will
read about how he was bullied by his peers, his drunken and cruel father, how
one of his friend's liked it when his father sexually played with him before he
killed himself, how a boy brutally beat his homosexual brother, his crush on
his college professor, how he would sneak away to an abandoned house for sex
with another boy, a boys 'coming out' at church, and other critically important
learning lessons for elementary school students.
PABBIS continues to ask why this particular elementary
school library contains such explicit and, according to the FCPS catalog
itself, age inappropriate books. Is this the sort of reading material the
principal feels should be "integrated into" the lives of children aged
five and up? Is the Groveton community aware what their children can read at
their local elementary school?
PABBIS wonders if this book will also be
"missing-in-action" when Principal Lamb investigates the situation.
Are Groveton ES Principal Lamb and Librarian Barbara Russell both incompetent
or do they have an extremely inappropriate reading agenda?

Love & Sex : Ten Stories of Truth
Love & Sex : Ten Stories of Truth was just copyrighted in 2001. By
the summer of 2002 FCPS had this book in 3 high schools [Chantilly, Madison,
South Lakes]. Since that time the book has been placed in 3 more high schools
[Annandale, Oakton, West Springfield]. It is unknown how many more books are
currently on order, but obviously this must be an important book for it to be
purchased so quickly under the much talked about FCPS budget shortfall.
The FCPS library catalog review for this book says some of
the short stories "..include graphic sexual scenes, but always as integral
parts of the stories." Well this book certainly does have graphic sexual
scenes and of course they are part of the story. Did the reviewer think that
maybe someone would mistake the graphic sex scenes for part of some other
story?
This book was edited by Michael Cart, the author of My
Father's Scar, a book about a homosexual college student featured in the 8
Jan 2003 PABBIS News. Fortunately unlike My Father's Scar, this book is
not found in an elementary school [yet]. My Father's Scar contained a
plug on the back cover from Francesca Block who has many books on the excerpts
section of the PABBIS website. An upcoming News Story will be on a book
reviewed by Michael Cart, currently in 2 elementary schools, that is about a
boy who is attracted to a gay friend of his older brother. It is interesting
how the same people write, edit, provide positive reviews and plug each others
controversial books, especially those with homosexuality.
Love & Sex : Ten Stories of Truth is about teenage sex, and pretty
much only about teenage sex. A more accurate title would be Sex and Sex :
Ten Stories. The editor lets us know, "..sex not gone away, it has
become a quintessential – perhaps even obligatory – rite of passage for
adolescents." The author of one of the stories says, "..like most
teenagers, my inner teen is obsessed with sex." In this book you can read
about an abortion [ "..germ inside you ..the dot had already been vacuumed
out" ], smoking dope, erections, sex between boys and girls, boys and
boys, girls and girls, and a boy's under-the-bed porn stash. One story is about
a boy who graphically masturbates into the page of a yearbook over the picture
of a boy he can't stop thinking about. Later he has a graphic sexual experience
with this boy.
Perhaps some FCPS educators think teenagers don't think
enough about sex and want to encourage them to think more about it. Or perhaps
they want them to think more graphically about sex, or to think about different
kinds of sex. It is hard to understand what the purpose of a book like this is
in an educational environment.
Isn't sex education supposedly covered in the FCPS Family
Life Education, a non-fiction part of the curriculum? Why is FCPS spending
taxpayer funds on this book?

The excerpts might look familiar to
the Fairfax County school board. A parent read some of them, not even the most
graphic, before the school board on November 21, 2002. What she read was muted
[censored] by FCPS if you watched on Cable Channel 21. When Channel 21 replayed
this same meeting on January 2, 2003 her remarks were muted again. During the
meeting one school board member got very agitated that these excerpts were
being read and wanted to prevent the parent from doing this. PABBIS wonders
whether this board member was agitated because she thinks the material is
inappropriate or if she just doesn't want the public to know what material she
thinks is acceptable for purchase with our tax dollars, and use with our
children?

Do Parents Know Peter Is In Their
Neighborhood School?
This news story is again about an inappropriate book found
in Fairfax County elementary schools - this time not at Groveton ES.
The entire book is about a 15-year old boy "finding
out" he is homosexual. Peter is specifically noted in the FCPS
library catalog review to be for grade 7 and up. The catalog has this book
listed under the subject term homosexuality. It is found in Cherry Run ES,
Mount Vernon Woods ES, Jackson MS and no other elementary or middle schools in
the county.
Peter is very positively reviewed in the FCPS catalog by Michael Cart, the
author of My Father's Scar and editor of Love & Sex : Ten Stories
of Truth featured in PABBIS News on 8 January 2003 and 13 January 2003,
respectively. The common themes in all 3 of these books are sex and
homosexuality.
In this book elementary school children will explore a wide
variety of perhaps new vocabulary words and their use including queer,
marshmallow, pansies, Christ, bondage, shit, shitty, bullshit, friggin’,
dickhead[s], faggot, camp, poof, poofter, big dicks, butch, Jesus, gay, tits,
bastard, perving, boobs, slut, sluts, bi, fart-arse, fuckin’, bitch, frangers,
condoms, wanking off, Chrissake, screw, and VD.
Why do these particular elementary school libraries contain
such an explicit and, according to the FCPS catalog itself, age inappropriate
book. Is this the sort of reading material the principals feel is appropriate
for children aged five and up? Are the Cherry Run and Mount Vernon Woods
communities aware what their children can read at their neighborhood school?
Peter's older brother's friend is described: "..he’s
not the campus faggot, but he’s certainly had his flings.. It’s his dick, he
can stick it where he likes."
Peter's friend tries to get him to have sex with his sister:
"..you being a poof is headlines.. Score a girlfriend now.. Get a
girlfriend, that’ll fix everything.. she’s itchin’.. give her a quick feel-up
and she’s yours.. T, this is your sister you’re talking about. She’s gotta do
it with someone, it might as well be you.. make sure you use frangers [condom]."
Peter wonders if he is homosexual: "He buys a “gay
men’s magazine... ducked into another public toilet.. smell of urine.. perving
on pictures of naked men. Or 2 men together... good looking blokes with
terrific bodies. Mostly they were naked, or they wore scraps of leather.. got
the lot, full on, balls and all.. got the stirrings, perving on naked
men.."
PABBIS wonders if these books will also be
"missing-in-action" when the principals investigate the situation. We
hope so.
Perhaps some FCPS educators think elementary and middle

Hughes Middle School - Pedophilia in
a book and in real life with a teacher
At the end of last month a former physical education teacher
at Langston Hughes MS entered an Alford plea of guilt to crimes against nature
- consensual sodomy. She will be sentenced in April. This FCPS teacher
initiated a homosexual relationship with an 8th grade girl while she was the
girl's teacher at Hughes MS. This teacher continued the relationship with the
young girl the next year at South Lakes HS, where she was the girl's basketball
coach.
A challenge to the book When I was Puerto Rican was
initiated at Hughes MS last fall [see PABBIS News 18 October 02]. Hughes MS
Principal Deborah Jackson thought that this book was acceptable for her middle
school students. PABBIS notes that this book has three instances of
molestation/pedophilia. In the first the young girl has a perverted piano
teacher who is also her school principal. He keeps rubbing against her and
trying to see her breasts. The girl tells her mom about this incident. Another
time the young girl is pinched on her breast by an adult relative and paid a
dollar to not tell anyone about it. Although humiliated she doesn't tell her
mom, or anyone else, about this - she buys an ice cream with the money. In a
third instance the young girl watches a man from her window who, in a graphically
described scene, is masturbating while looking at her. Although her mom is in
the same room, the girl doesn't even tell her. In fact the girl goes back to
the window and stares and smiles at the man.
Principal Jackson and FCPS just don't get it. When the
challengers to When I was Puerto Rican met with Principal Jackson, they
were provided with a review of the book taken from School Library Journal. The
review of this book was taken from a February 1994 article on multiple books
titled Adult Books For Young Adults, written by a FCPS employee - Pam Spencer.
The review for When I was Puerto Rican, like every other book review in
the article, was written by FCPS employees - the one for this book by Ginny
Ryder. Pam Spencer's article did not indicate if she considered pre-teen
children “young adults.” But Principal Jackson and the Hughes librarian, Jean
Fidyk obviously do.
An adult is 18 years old. Hughes MS is for 6-8th grade. Most
6th grade children are 11-years old. Why does FCPS think 11-year old children are
young adults? Why does FCPS think 11-year olds should read about a pedophilia
and masturbation?
When I was Puerto Rican is also at Franklin, Holmes [6-8th], Key, and
Glasgow [6-8th] middle schools.

Happy Valentine's Day! - A lovely book
from the Fairfax County Public Schools for our children?
This news story is again about an inappropriate book found
in Fairfax County elementary and middle schools. The book is specifically noted
in the FCPS library catalog review to be for grade 10 - 12 but it's in one
elementary school (Haycock) and seven middle schools (Herndon, Hughes, Jackson,
Key, Longfellow, Stone, and Thoreau). The FCPS library catalog describes this
book as bleak, dark, disturbing, and violent. The FCPS catalog says that there
is not a lot of sex in this book, but the sex is explicit. The Fairfax County
Public Library places this book in the adult section. This book is the 65th
most challenged book of the 1990's according to the American Library Association.
What's the story with FCPS administrators in charge of
libraries, and some FCPS librarians? Are they inept and incompetent or do they
have some kind of agenda to push smutty, age-inappropriate material to our
children? Wouldn't a professional librarian dealing with pre-teen children know
this is a very controversial book? Wouldn't a professional librarian working
with pre-teen children read the book or at least their own FCPS catalog review?
What's the story with the FCPS Superintendent, Dr. Domenech?
Why does he think this stuff is appropriate? What's the story with Fairfax
County School Board? It is laughable that Stu Gibson, Robert Frye, Jane
Strauss, Isis Castro, Cathy Belter and some others on the school board are
making it harder for parents to complain, are denying that controversial and
inappropriate books are an issue, and are continuing to ignore the request for
Standards of Decency in book selection.
What's the story with the Fairfax County Council of PTA's -
shills for the "anything goes - at any age" extremists in FCPS and on
the Fairfax County school board? They seem to be a little confused over what
the "P" in PTA really means. Guess they got their extreme agenda
marching orders from their national leaders.
In this book pre-teen children can read about a 13-year old
boy, with the power to make himself invisible, who:
- Is sexually infatuated with his aunt. He fondles her silk
panties, he 'erupts into ecstasy' at night in bed thinking about her,
ejaculates in his pants while they are looking at each other, and eventually is
thrilled when she places his hand on her breast.
- Watches the dad of a classmate paying another classmate to perform oral sex
on her. He than watches the dad performing the oral sex on the young girl.
"She giggled as he raised her
up.. setting her on the desk facing him. She pulled back her skirt.. he raised
her legs onto his shoulders and plunged his face between her legs. He moaned
and his shoulders jerked violently as he burrowed between her thighs.. Her eyes
were vacant.. Oh, T Mr. D moaned.. voice muffled as he gasped her name and
reached around now to clutch her buttocks."
- While watching the sister of a classmate undress, sees her
having sex with her own brother.
- Observes a teenage boy demanding oral sex from a 9-year old boy. The main
character intervenes (when invisible) to stop this - maybe FCPS thinks his
doing the right thing here outweighs any controversial material in the book.
In this book pre-teen children will also explore a wide
variety of vocabulary words and their use including niggers, bastard/bastards,
shitters, son of a bitch, shit, goddamed, bitch, Jesus, and Christ.
Why do these particular elementary and middle school
libraries contain such an explicit and, according to the FCPS catalog itself,
age inappropriate book? Is this the sort of reading material the principals of
these schools think is appropriate? Are the communities around these schools
aware what their children can read at their neighborhood school? It is very
hard to understand what FCPS might think the purpose of a book like this is in
the K-8 educational environment.
PABBIS hopes this book will be "missing-in-action"
like those challenged at Groveton ES (see previous PABBIS NEWS Stories), when
the principals of these schools investigate the situation.

Your Tax Dollars At Work
in the Fairfax County Public Schools
This news story is about another inappropriate
book found in Fairfax County middle schools - Where the Kissing Never Stops,
by Ron Koertge. The main plot of this book is about a teenage boy's yearning
for sexual experience. The book is specifically noted in the FCPS library
catalog review to be for grade 11 - 12 but it is on the shelves in two middle
schools (Irving and Key) and available to 9th - 12th grade students at nine
high schools. The FCPS catalog review says, "The frankness of the language
and the situations, common to older high-school students, makes this book
appropriate for just that age."
The FCPS review says the main character's mother
works as a stripper and that he and his friend are preoccupied with sexual
fantasies. It also says, "The discussions and wisecracks between the boys
about sex and masturbation will have readers laughing out loud..." The
main character meets a girl and they "..consumate their affair.."
Wouldn't a professional librarian working with
pre-teen children read the book or at least their own FCPS catalog review?
Wouldn't a professional librarian dealing with pre-teen children know this is a
very controversial book? Are they inept and incompetent or do they have some
kind of agenda to push smutty, age-inappropriate material on our children?
This book contradicts what is purported to be
taught in FCPS Family Life Education. Director Nancy Sprague emphasized at a
recent school board meeting that our FLE curriculum is abstinence-based."
The message of this book in no way supports abstinence, in fact, it encourages
sexual activity. Seems like FCPS is talking out of both sides of its mouth.
FCPS allows opting out of FLE, but then sneaks these kinds of books into the
library for all unsuspecting kids and parents.
Why does the FCPS Superintendent, Dr. Domenech think
this stuff is appropriate for children as young as 12 years old? Why are school
board members Stu Gibson, Robert Frye, Jane Strauss, Isis Castro, Cathy Belter
and some others making it harder for parents to complain, denying that
controversial and inappropriate books are an issue, and continuing to ignore
the request for Standards of Decency in book selection?
Why do Irving MS Principal William Oehrlein and
librarians Ruth Milin, Jeanie Bailey and Jeannie Carruth think this book is
appropriate for middle school students? Why do Key MS Principal Harold Price
and librarians Deborah Bullock and Tracy Sollers think this book is appropriate
for middle school students?
Here are 21 words and phrases used in the book
that might be a clue to a librarian about the suitability of this book for
middle school: breasts, tit, boobs, knocker, penis, dick, pecker, tool, wiener,
horny, condom/s, prophylactic, (contraceptive) foam, abortion, masturbation,
jerked off, erection, ever-present erection, killer erection, hard-on, boner
and embarrassing erection.
Why do these particular middle school libraries
contain such an explicit and, according to the FCPS catalog itself, age
inappropriate book. It is difficult to understand what FCPS might think the
purpose of a book like this is in the educational environment.

What's Going On At
Haycock Elementary School?
PABBIS decided to take a closer look at Fairfax
County elementary schools with explicit books. We investigated which schools
had these six books:
1) A Time for Dancing - Drug and alcohol use,
extensive use of s and f-words, sexual situations, references to castration and
size of boy's penis; FCPS library catalog review grade 7 - 10.
2) Fade - Extensive sexual situations including
incest, pedophilia, oral sex; FCPS library catalog review grade 10 - 12; 65th
most challenged book of the 1990's; see 14 February 2003 PABBIS News.
3) Fallen Angels - Extensive use of s
and f-words, graphic violence, sexual transmitted disease, homosexuality; FCPS
library catalog review grade 10 and up; 36th most challenged book of the
1990's.
4) The Chocolate War - Extensive foul
language, masturbation, sexual situations, violence, boy sexually excited by
roughhousing with or viciously tackling other boys; 4th most challenged book of
the 1990's.
5) Uncle Vampire - Entire plot of the
book focuses on the life of a high school girl who is being sexually abused
(raped) by her uncle; FCPS library catalog review grade 7 - 10; see 16 December

6) Witch Baby - One in a series of
books by this author with homosexual themes, actions and situations; Others in

investigated were in most or nearly all middle schools.
The good news is that these six books are only
in a few elementary schools. The bad news is that they might be in your child's
elementary school. Other good news is that, with one exception, each of the
elementary schools with the books only had one of the six books investigated.
The exception was Haycock ES, which had three of the six books!
Why do these elementary schools have such
graphic and, according to the FCPS catalog itself, age inappropriate books? Is
this the sort of reading material the principals of these schools think is
appropriate? What is the purpose of books like these in an elementary school
environment?
Why does Haycock ES have the most explicit
books? What's the story with Haycock ES? Who is authorizing the purchases of
these books - the principal or the librarian? Are they incompetent or do they
have some kind of agenda to push smutty, age-inappropriate material to our
children?
On February 14, 2003 there was a PABBIS news
story on Fade, a book so explicit that it is cataloged in the adult
section of Fairfax County Public Libraries. The FCPS library catalog describes
this book as bleak, dark, disturbing, and violent. The FCPS catalog says that
the sex in this book is explicit. The news story on Fade was sent to
Principal McClain. Now, over 2 months later, according to the FCPS library
catalog, this book is still in Haycock ES. That, and the fact there are at
least two other explicit books at Haycock ES, makes us wonder if Principal
McClain thinks this explicit material is appropriate for elementary school
children. We hope the use of these explicit books in Haycock ES and all the
other elementary schools was a mistake and the principals will decide to remove
them.
